| Ann Burlein will be Visiting Associate Professor at UC Berkeley for 2007-08. In addition to anchoring the undergraduate program with her courses in Theory and Method, Dr. Burlein will be part of the Mellon Strategic Working Group on Religion, Secularism, and Modernity at the Townsend Center for the Humanities. The Mellon grant program seeks to bring faculty at UC Berkeley together to think about curricular innovation. The goal of this particular Strategic Working Group will be to translate its work into a proposal for developing a concentration in Religious Studies at the doctoral level (as well as reform of the undergraduate major and the develop of a Center or Institute for the Study of Religion). In addition to theoretical discussion of the transformation of the practice and study of religion in the modern period, the group will also focus on the challenges facing the study of religion in the 21st century in regard research and pedagogical paradigms. The group will be led by Robert Sharf (who works on religion in Japan and chairs UC Berkeley's Center for Buddhist Studies) and Saba Mahmood (who is an anthropologist and works in particular on Islam and Islamism). |
