UNC Charlotte M.A. Program Hall of Fame

 

Since the program's inauguration in 2003, students and graduates of the M.A. program in religious studies at UNC Charlotte have won admittance to Ph.D. programs at the following institutions: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Rice University; McMaster University, University of Toronto; Jewish Theological Seminary; University of Pennsylvania; University of Edinburgh.

Below is a list of our graduates, their thesis titles, and their current situation:

  • Michael Korvink, Starting From Scratch: A Positional-Statistical Approach to the Indus Script (advisor: John C. Reeves).  Employed in the private sector.
  • Franklin H. Trammell, Piping and Wailing: Against the Stratification of Sapiential and Apocalyptic Layers in Q (advisor: James D. Tabor).  Doctoral student, Rice University.
  • Paul R. Gilliam, The Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of John: Complementary Christological Compositions (advisor: James D. Tabor).  Doctoral student, University of Edinburgh.
  • Leif Tornquist, The Biopoliticization of Protestant Care: A Discursive Analysis of Protestant Ministerial Advocacy of Eugenics in the United States (advisor: Ann Burlein).  Doctoral student, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
  • Tammie Wanta, The Other Adam: Biblical Intimations of a Semi-Divine "First Man" (advisor: John C. Reeves).  Doctoral student, University of Pennsylvania.
  • Janna Shedd, The Scripture of Salvation and Lingbao Practices of the Body: A Reexamination of Asceticism in the Context of Lingbao Daoism (advisor: David Mozina). Employed as an adjunct instructor, UNC Charlotte Dept. of Religious Studies.
  • Ginger Stickney, "I Here Acknowledge Indebtedness to My Abusers": Subjection, Power, and Stories of the Self (advisor: Sean McCloud).  Employed as an adjunct instructor, UNC Charlotte Dept. of Religious Studies.
  • Jeffrey S. Patterson, Solomon's Portico: The Jerusalem Church in the Book of Acts (advisor: James D. Tabor).  Pastor, Main Street United Methodist Church, Kernersville, N.C.
