THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHARLOTTE, Department of Religious Studies, seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of religion and modern culture, beginning August 2009.  A Ph.D. in religious studies at the time of appointment, teaching experience, and a formulated research agenda are required. Candidates must have a strong background in the western intellectual tradition, be conversant in cultural theory and be able to teach theory and method and interdisciplinary courses.

Area of specialization can be, but is not limited to: ethnic studies and globalization, arts and literature, science and technology, ethics and bioethics. This is a new position in addition to the one in religion and modern culture that was filled last year.

Offering both the B.A. and M.A. degrees, Religious Studies has 16 full-time and 5 adjunct faculty members who cover a broad range within the academic study of religion (http://religiousstudies.uncc.edu). The department is housed in the College Liberal Arts & Sciences whose twenty departments and eleven interdisciplinary programs play a leading role in advancing the university’s research profile and in fulfilling its commitment to providing a broad and integrative liberal arts education.  The college is strongly committed to interdisciplinary research and teaching, supporting a range of interdisciplinary programs from minors to the Ph.D.  UNC Charlotte is a dynamic research institution with some 900 full-time faculty and a student population of 22,500 that is expected to grow during the next decade.  It is located in a thriving metropolitan region known for its diversity and inclusiveness.
